Resilience among women and men aged 60 years and over in Sweden and in Thailand
Tue, 27 Jul 2010 23:00:00 +0100 | Nursing and Health Sciences
The purpose of this study was to compare the level of resilience of people aged [ge] 60 years in Sweden and Thailand. In a randomized sample of 422 people in Sweden and a convenience sample of 200 people in Thailand, the level of resilience was measured by using the Resilience Scale. A [chi]2-analysis was used for the differences between proportions. The relationships between the background variables and the resilience scores were analyzed by using stepwise multiple linear regression. The mean scores of resilience were 144 for the Swedish participants and 146 for the Thai participants. The two samples differed in their background characteristics. The Thai participants were more likely to be women, to be widowed, and to have more children, while among the Swedish participants, more women we...

Disclosures of funding sources and conflicts of interest in published HIV/---- research conducted in developing countries
Tue, 27 Jul 2010 10:02:29 +0100 | Journal of Medical Ethics
Conclusions Of the published studies examined, over a third did not disclose funding source (ie, whether or not there was a funding source) and 80% did not disclose whether COI existed. Most articles in ICMJE-affiliated journals did not disclose COI. These data suggest the need to consider alteration of policies to require that published articles include funding and COI information, to allow readers to assess articles as fully as possible. Nevirapine-associated hepatotoxicity was not predicted by CD4 count ≥250 cells/μL among women in Zambia, Thailand and Kenya
Sun, 25 Jul 2010 23:00:00 +0100 | HIV Medicine
The aim of the study was to determine risk factors for developing severe hepatotoxicity (grade 3 or 4 hepatotoxicity) and rash-associated hepatotoxicity (rash with [ge]grade 2 hepatotoxicity) among women initiating nevirapine-based antiretroviral therapy (ART). The Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor Response Study was a prospective cohort study carried out in Zambia, Thailand and Kenya. Between May 2005 and January 2007, we enrolled antiretroviral-naïve HIV-infected women initiating nevirapine-based ART. At enrolment and at weeks 2, 4, 8, 16 and 24, participants had serum alanine transferase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) measured and were evaluated clinically for hepatitis and rash. Nevirapine-based ART was initiated in 820 women and baseline ALT or AST results were a...

Development of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to determine puerarin and its aglycone daidzein
Sat, 24 Jul 2010 13:50:24 +0100 | Journal of Natural Medicines
Abstract   Pueraria candollei (White Kwao Khuer) is a medicinal plant containing puerarin (8-C-glucosyl-4’,7-dihydroxyisoflavone) and its aglycone, daidzein, as major isoflavonoids used for its rejuvenating and estrogenic effects. In order to analyze these isoflavonoids, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed using polyclonal antibody (PAb) against puerarin. Puerarin was conjugated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) to be used as an immunogen for production of PAb from a rabbit. The PAb has been shown to be specific to puerarin and its aglycone, daidzein. An ELISA was then performed using anti-puerarin PAb in the range of 6.10 ng/ml–1.56 μg/ml of puerarin. Based on validation analysis, this analytical method by ELISA is a precise, accurate, a...

Pattern of corticosteroid allergy in Thailand.
Fri, 23 Jul 2010 14:42:26 +0100 | Dermatitis
CONCLUSION:Corticosteroid allergy is found to multiple corticosteroids, and concomitant reactions occur across groups. Group D1 corticosteroid esters produced a higher positive reaction rate (61.9%) than groups D2 (52.38%) and A (51.72%). This may be due to different prescribing habits or the easy access to D1 corticosteroids sold over the counter by pharmacies in Thailand. PMID: 20646671 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Dermatitis)

The effect of modified roofing on the milk yield and reproductive performance of heat-stressed dairy cows under hot-humid conditions
Wed, 21 Jul 2010 23:00:00 +0100 | Animal Science Journal
The objective was to measure the effects of cooling techniques (shade cloth vs. normal roof) on performance and physiology of 16 Friesian crossbred cows (87.5% Holstein Friesian × 12.5% Brahman) located at Sakol Nakhon Livestock Research and Testing Station, Department of Livestock Development, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (Sakol Nakhon, Thailand). They were divided randomly into two groups of eight. The two groups were used to evaluate the effects of modified roofing (normal roof fitted with woven polypropylene shade cloth) on the subjects' milk yield and reproductive performance under hot humid conditions. Results indicated that the modified roofing offered a more efficient way to minimize heat stress than the normal roof. The difference was sufficient to enable the cows to ...
